According to a booklet published in 1917 by the Tunisian branch of the Dante Alighieri Society and quoted by historian Adriano Salmieri (see his contribution to the volume Mestieri e professioni degli italiani di Tunisia – Métiers et professions des Italiens de Tunisie, a cura di S. Finzi, Tunisi: Finzi, 2003), by the end of April 1917 11,146 Italians in Tunisia had been drafted for the war, and 700 had died. According to the same source, in 1917 in Tunisia the Italian government was paying daily allowances to almost 5,000 destitute families of drafted soldiers.
