Under terms of an 1896 agreement with France, Italy ran a military conscription office in Tunis. It was through this office that Italy drafted its migrants in Tunisia for the war on Turkey in 1911-12 and for the First World War. During WWI, many Italians living in Tunisia, because of their knowledge of the French language. were assigned to the military units posted in France. Many of them died or were crippled for life. After the war, the Italian government opened a War Pensions Bureau in Tunis.
