Tunis, 15 April 1912
We do not know whether the Italians living in Tunisia who collected money to buy Italy a plane were aware that Italy would use planes to bomb civilians in Libya. To be sure, they supported Italian expansionist policy.
This receipt bears the signature of the treasurer of the committee that was collecting funding to buy Italy a plane, Giuseppe Di Vittorio, the owner of a successful construction company. The donor, Ugo Moreno, was another “big man” of the Italian community in Tunisia: a lawyer, he established a bank (Banca Italiana di Credito), in 1901 started an oil company (Societé du Pétrole) and in 1919 became town councillor in Tunis.
