Description:

The well-known Irish topographer Edward Dodwell toured Greece twice: in 1801 and 1805–6 and he later produced several works on Greece’s scenery, its antiquities and the people’s life. He managed to cover a wide range of Greek subjects and to record faithfully-in both his drawings and his descriptions- various aspects of Greek life and customs. Dodwell’s folio Views in Greece (1821) includes an identical image entitled “Bazaar of Athens”, which is obviously based on this watercolour. According to the artist’s description in the text, on the right-hand side is seen a coffee-shop frequented by important people, such as the disdar (e.g. Governor of Athens) depicted in a scarlet gown.
