Description:

Silkworm farming developed in both France and Italy from the 15th century. Over-intensive farming caused the spread of various silkworm-based illnesses in the mid-19th century. Louis Pasteur, the famous scientist known for his work on the rabies vaccine amongst other things, was called on to find a cure. In 1870 he published Une Étude sur la Maladie des Vers à Soie, in which he proposed the use of various preventive methods, which proved effective. Pictured here is an illustration of silkworms immune to illness.
