Description:

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, a number of different political movements for votes for women emerged, all using many different tactics. For example in May 1908, following the English model, a group of "suffragettes" held a protest during the Paris municipal elections, in which their actions (upturning ballot boxes, breaking polling station windows) were controversial. The following month, a national congress on women's rights and suffrage was held in Paris, an act which was hugely symbolic in and of itself. Their struggle was a long one, and it was not until 1944 that French women obtained the right to vote, which they exercised for the first time in 1945.
