Félix Bonfils settled as a photographer in Libya in 1867. Helped by his assistants, he reproduced photographs taken during his travels in neighbouring countries. These pictures were sold in albums or individually, to tourists or painters exploring the Middle East. In this photograph a merchant of Thebes is pictured, napping amongst the mummies he sells. The mummies were then bought either by European collectors, or for other purposes (medical ingredients, etc.).
