The engraver Oscar Roty was famous for his image of "La Semeuse" (the sower), which was stamped on French coins. This symbolic medallion, depicting two young students, pays tribute to Jules Ferry's education laws, which introduced free, secular and mandatory primary schooling for girls and boys.
