Description:

The French established two museums in Algeria after the conquest: one in Algiers (1838), and another in Cherchell (1840). The latter was overshadowed by the reputation of the former and lacked subsidies. A report from 1855 describes abandoned collections, to which the objects found during an 1856 excavation were soon added. This image, dating from 1856, highlights both the richness of the works presented to the Musée de Cherchell and their inadequate conservation. A new museum, built in 1908, allowed the collections to be stored in better conditions.
