Description:

Horace Vernet (1789–1863), the official painter of both Napoléon III and Louis-Philippe, was tasked with painting the "discovery" and conquest of Algeria. Various images of Algeria were published in the illustrated press in order to acquaint the French with Algeria and feed the narrative of a peaceful conquest. This idyllic painting of a group storytelling was very popular in the Salon des Beaux-Arts in 1834, and was reproduced by the engraver Jean-Pierre Marie Jazet in order to ensure its wider diffusion in the national press.
