Description:

Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet (1804–1860), sketcher and painter, travelled to Southern Russia, Crimea and Turkey with the Prince Demidoff in 1837. He brought back with him a few hundred illustrated pages, which were published in Voyage en Crimée. This image, depicting a café in Smyrna (Izmir), the "Little Paris" of the Ottoman Empire, is an excellent example of Orientalist drawing.
