Diplomatic relations between France and Persia were strained at the beginning of the 19th century, so Persia began to turn more and more to Great Britain. However, following a disagreement with Great Britain over the city of Herat, Persia re-established its diplomatic relationship with France. The ambassador Farrokh Khan was sent to Paris in the midst of the Anglo-Persian war (1856–57), and Napoléon III's diplomatic aid led to the Treaty of Paris (1857) and successfully ended the conflict. Félix Nadar, one of the most famous portrait photographers in Paris, photographed Farrokh Khan for the occasion.
