Description:

The cartoonist Honoré Daumier (1808–1879) was one of the first to be interested in the theme of migration, and drew many cartoon strips which dealt with the difficulties of exile. He did some more comic drawings on this theme, which are harder to understand. In this image, published in a series on the theme of the "Bohemian" (an artistic community attempting to live without restrictions), he highlights the gaze of his contemporaries on the "other" or the "stranger". The image also mocks the suspicious young woman just as much as the asylum seeker.
