Between 1859 and 1869, the Compagnie Universelle du Canal Maritime de Suez built a canal joining the Red Sea to the Mediterranean, thus opening up a strategic trade route towards the Indian subcontinent. This panoramic image was drawn by Louis Maurice Adolphe Linant de Bellefonds (1798–1883), artist and explorer fascinated with Egypt who played a key role, alongside Ferdinand de Lesseps, in the planning and construction of the Suez Canal.
