Emmanuel de Rougé was a French egyptologist who continued the work of Champollion. He was a member of l'Academie des Sciences, the curator of the "Musée Égyptien" of the Musée du Louvre (1849), professor of Egyptian archaeology at the Collège de France (1864), and authored many works on the history of Egypt. In 1862, he was sent on a mission to Egypt where he travelled along the Nile from the Delta to the cataracts, on a boat which had been loaned to the mission by Isma'il Pasha. This mission was the subject of a report and an illustrated publication with photographs by the Viscount Aymard de Banville. This photograph was taken at San, also known as the ancient site of Tanis, where the archaeologist Mariette was directing an excavation.
