At the end of the 19th century, France tried to catch up with its counterparts in the arms trade, as it had begun to fall behind England, Germany and others in recent decades. Commercial interests also played a part. In 1872, the Compagnie des Chargeurs Réunis established a maritime relationship between France and South America for the movement of passengers and merchandise. As this poster shows, they put great emphasis on the different services passengers were provided aboard these steamers.
