During the Egyptian expedition (1798–1801), Napoléon Bonaparte brought with him a group of scholars, engineers and artists, charged with collecting as much scientific information as possible. This was then used in a publication (of exceptional quality and execution) entitled Description de l'Égypte, in which the observations and enquiries made by the military expedition in Egypt were collected. The collection comprises of 10 volumes of illustrations and 9 volumes of texts published between 1809 and 1826.
