French agriculture in Tunisia began either through the establishment of large properties by private initiatives, or the introduction of settlers by the public authorities. This is a photograph from the "first phase" - one of the "companies" (of "French farms") had purchased a large plot of land, and employed a number of (largely Arab and Italian) workers to cultivate it. Pictured is a local driver bringing the mail van to the immigrant communities in Munchar (in the Béja region.) This picture was taken to reassure prospective immigrants that they would be able to easily communicate with their families back home.
