Description:

French agriculture in Tunisia began either through the establishment of large properties by private initiatives, or the introduction of settlers by the public authorities. This is a photograph from the "first phase" - one of the "companies" (of "French farms") had purchased a large plot of land, and employed a number of (largely Arab and Italian) workers to cultivate the land. It shows two combine harvesters which had been imported for the development of intensive cereal faming, and would have been used as advertising for Europeans considering investing in this type of agricultural "company".
