French agriculture in Tunisia began either through the establishment of large properties by private initiatives, or the introduction of settlers by the public authorities. This photograph shows us an example from the "first phase" - one of the "companies" (of "French farms") had purchased a large plot of land, and employed a number of (largely Arab and Italian) workers to cultivate the land. Pictured is a school, whose director also worked as the post officer, a vital service for those who wished to communicate with their families back home.
