Description:

French agriculture in Tunisia began either through the establishment of large properties by private initiatives, or the introduction of settlers by the public authorities. This photograph shows an example from the "first phase" - one of the "companies" (of "French farms") had purchased a large plot of land, and employed a number of (largely Arab and Italian) workers to cultivate the land. The number of people in this photograph - many of whom are pitifully dressed - shows us that those employed were often large families, searching for work in an attempt to escape the poverty of their home countries.
