Heinrich Schliemann (1822–1890) was a German businessman who discovered his passion for archaeology whilst travelling. In 1870 he decided to direct an archaeological campaign in Turkey where he discovered the ruins of Troy. Various scandals (stolen objects, scientific errors) quickly destroyed his reputation, and today he is credited only with having created sites which led to important advances in the field. However, this plan of Troy is evidence for Schliemann's efforts to direct the excavations in a rigorous scientific manner.
