Description:

Following on the European fascination for the oriental world and for the famous Nasrid Palace of the Alhambra (Granada), a lot of reproductions of its remarkable architecture and decorations were made and spread. José Contreras was commended as restorer and decorator and his son, Rafael (1824–1890), was the leading pioneer of this trend in 1847. His work was continued by the grandson and by a huge number of plaster-cast workshops in Granada, and very likely, in other cities. His plasterworks were very successful in the International Exhibitions and were kept in private collections and museums like South Kensington (London). These delightful polychrome models, accentuated with a black frame, represents different rooms form the Alhambra Palace as the Comares Room, with its double horseshoe.
