This painting was made around 1863 when the author travelled to Morocco with Mariano Fortuny. The reason for his travel was to paint the characters and picturesque garments as the way of life of the people from Morocco. The influence his experiences had on his works can be found in his paintings and drawings. During his travels he bought exotic artworks, such as Egyptian sarcophagi. Harem and markets are considered a genre painting in Orientalism.
