In August 1840 and again in 1848 Delamare visited the ruins of Cuicul, an ancient Roman colony founded by Nerva and Trajan at the end of the first century. He brought a number of sketches back from these visits, with the most important of these currently kept at the Cabinet du Livre in the old library at the Sorbonne. This drawing, kept at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, accurately reproduces of the ruins of the theatre, built in the second century beyond the city walls.
