About Museum of Islamic Art at the Pergamon Museum, State Museums, Berlin
605–562 BC; excavated in 1902
The Museum of the Ancient Near East, dating back to 1899, considers itself as a place where cultures of the region can be studied, but also as the custodian of the rich excavation finds from German field studies. The most eminent examples of the custodial work are the Processional Way and the Ishtar Gate of ancient Babylon, of whom only the foundational walls were exposed during excavations in 1902. Only after thousands of fragments had been put together, the reconstruction could be integrated into the museum.
