About Museum of Islamic Art at the Pergamon Museum, State Museums, Berlin
170 BC; discovered in 1864
The Pergamon Museum building owes its name to a spectacular finding in Turkey. The story of this discovery of the past starts in 1864 with the German engineer Carl Humann, who urged the Berlin museums to undertake proper excavations when he saw local lime burners burning ancient remains on the acropolis. The subsequent research unveiled important remains of Hellenistic art. With the museum opening in 1930 and the architectural reconstructions of the Ancient, Hellenistic, Roman and Islamic Middle East the museum developed in one of the most famous institutions of its kind.
