Description:

Built by Monsignor Joseph Debs, the neo-classical cathedral was inspired by the largest Catholic Marian church in Rome, the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, and bears great resemblance to it. The construction of this church, dedicated to patron saint St George, was finished in 1894. Heavily hit and looted (including an important Delacroix painting of St Georges) during the Lebanese civil war it was finally restored and re-inaugurated in April 2000.
