Description:

Portrait of Count Edmund Szechenyi. He was born in 1839 in Bratislava and studied the work of fire brigades in London. In 1869 he founded in Budapest the first volunteer fire brigade, which was transformed into a professional fire brigade in 1870. From 1871–1874 he commanded the umbrella organisation of all fire brigades in Hungary. In 1875 he was sent by Emperor Franz Joseph to Istanbul to build up a fire brigade in the Ottoman capital. As head of the fire brigade he became the first Christian Pasha in the Ottoman Army and stayed in Istanbul until his death in 1922.
