Portrait of Omar Pasha. He was born in Croatia in 1806 near the Turkish-Hungarian border. In 1828 he deserted from the Austrian army and joined the Ottoman administration in Bosnia. After a long career in the Ottoman army, he became the military governor of Bucharest and commanded the Ottoman forces at the siege of Sevastopol in Crimea. In 1862 he suppressed an uprising in Herzogovina and led a victorious campaign against Montenegro. In 1868 he became War Minister and died in 1871 in Istanbul.
