Description:

Klemens Wenzel Lothar of Metternich was the leading diplomat at the Congress of Vienna (1815) who organized the balance of power between the European states. The core of Metternich's policy was supporting Austrian hegemony in Italy and preventing Russian hegemony in Germany. In the German Confederation, there existed an equilibrium between Austria and Prussian influences. Metternich's so-called "balance of power" politics ensured peace in Central Europe for a generation.
