Description:

Julius von Blaas received many commissions from the court and mostly painted portraits of the imperial family. He also painted naturalistic battle scenes depicting victories of the Austrian Army both past and present, like this scene of the occupation campaign of 1878. Here, the Dalmatian Imperial Infantry is attacking in line formation at Livno. The soldiers in the vanguard are already falling. Contrary to the prognoses of the foreign minister, Count Gyula Andrássy (1823–1890), the occupation campaign in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1878 was not just a short “Sunday walk with a concert band”; instead the Austro-Hungarian troops had to face hard military resistance and rugged defence.
