The terms of the Congress of Berlin (1878) placed the two Ottoman provinces of Bosnia and Herzegovina under the direct administration of Austro-Hungarian Empire. Troops under the command of general (Feldzeugmeister) Joseph Philippovich von Philippsberg (1818–1889) occupied both regions, which became – by annexation – integral parts of the empire in 1908. In 1882, the Austro-Hungarian Army began recruiting local troops from the provinces, which provided great military value, especially during World War I.
