Portrait of Carol I, King of Romania (1839–1914) on horseback/ Karl von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. He was elected Prince of Romania on the recommendation of Napoleon III in 1866. In 1881, after achieving formal independence from the Ottoman Empire, Carol declared himself King of Romania.
