Name of Monument:

Hôtel Majestic

Location:

Tunis, Tunisia

Date of Monument:

Late 19th – early 20th centuries

History:

This was the first luxury or grand hotel in Tunis. Built in 1912 and designed by the architect Paul Baron in an Art Nouveau style, in the early 20th century the Hôtel Majestic was the best hotel around. It was requisitioned by the German army between November 1942 and May 1943 and became the seat first of the Kommanduntur, then, after liberation, of the American army headquarters. After Tunisian independence and until the mid sixties President Habib Bourguiba used the hotel to receive many foreign heads of states and official guests. Many famous foreign artists, such as Brasser, Barbara, Aznavour, Luis Marino and Bécaud, who had come to Tunisia to give concerts or recitals, also stayed in the Hôtel Majestic.

Description:

Located on Avenue de Paris, the Hôtel Majestic offered, from a decorative and structural point of view, something totally new. With its sunny façade and terrace, this four-storey building was the first of its kind in the city. The furniture, woodwork, lighting and the rooms, which opened out onto one another in a modern fashion, were what gave the hotel its charm.
