About The Lebanese University, Beirut
1887
Founded in 1887, the Port of Beirut is located on the eastern side of St Georges Bay, on Beirut's northern Mediterranean coast, west of the Beirut river. It is one of the largest and busiest ports of the Eastern Mediterranean. In early 90’s, a phase of development and reconstruction took place. The Port was rehabilitated and expanded to encompass 4 docks, 2 new quays (15 and 16) and new container terminal with 700,000 TEU/year capacities. The container terminal became operational in February 2005. It is equipped with 6 ship-to-shore gantry cranes (outreach 60m) and 18 rubbed tyred gantry cranes. The Port of Beirut has been selected as a transhipment hub for the 2nd and 3rd largest container shipping companies in the world.
The Port of Beirut is the main port in Lebanon and it is one of the most beneficial commercial architecture in Lebanon that contributes the state’s revenue. It was founded in 1887 under the reign of the Ottomans and has since been the western-eastern link in the Middle East area. The Port of Beirut has a total area of 1,200,000 m2.
