Historically the Tribe of Lihyan was the first known Tribe settled in the area and founded the Kingdom of Lihyan in the "Oasis of Aula" in the sixth century until the fourth BC. There is not much historical information about the Lihyanite but mentions that they allied themselves with the Nabataeans later. The largest settlement in the area was in the first century AD when the Nabateans made it as the second capital of their kingdom after Petra in Jordan. The Nabateans dug their graves in the facades of the mountains of the region , where there are about 132 tombs cut and carved in the rock. Nabataean state has fallen at the hands of the Romans in the second century AD.
Mada'in Salih Station, which is located 25 kilometres north-east of al-'Ula City, was one of the main railway stations. The site contains seventeen building in addition to the ancient Islamic castle, and there is an old water pool and five wells folded with stones, as well as sixteen building of the railway station have been built in trimmed stones. The buildings had been converted into a museum tells the history of the Hijaz Railway.
