The Modern Art Centre of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, opened to the public in July 1983. Its collection now consists of more than 10,000 works covering Portuguese art from the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as some important international artists. Among these artworks and artists, there is an important collection of British art from the late 1950s / early 1960s; works by Robert and Sonia Delaunay and by Maria Helena Vieira da Silva and her husband Arpad Szenes, painters in Paris; works by Arshile Gorky, part of the Armenian background of this artist. The Modern Art Centre programming focuses on temporary exhibitions, showing Portuguese and international artists, and on exhibitions of the collection. Its mission is to make the artistic heritage accessible to the people.
