The Gramsci Institute Foundation preserves archives of major importance for the study of the political, social and cultural history of 20th-century Italy, with particular reference to the history of Republican Italy, including those of the Italian Communist Party (1921–91), Antonio Gramsci’s prison notebooks and letters from prison, and the papers of Luchino Visconti, Sibilla Aleramo and Luigi Squarzina. The foundation has a library of approximately 150,000 volumes and 4,000 periodicals.

The foundation carries out research projects in its areas of expertise and organises scholarly conferences and seminars, courses, exhibitions and training activities. It publishes the journal Studi Storici and a wide range of scholarly volumes, including the national edition of the writings of Antonio Gramsci.
