The objective of the new library remains the same as that of the old library: to act as a public research library and to support the people of the Arab world and the Middle East to retain their long-standing position as scholars and researchers in different fields of science.

The Library of Alexandria provides more than a library. In addition to the usual library facilities, the Library also contains other cultural and educational functions including a planetarium, several museums, an Internet archive, an audio-visual library, a school for information science, and conservation facilities. A Young Person’s Library is available for younger students and visitors. In addition to this, a new conference centre is linked to an existing auditorium on the site, making the Library a centrepiece for both learning and debate.

Today, the Library of Alexandria is receiving about 1.5 million visitors a year. Its webcast service provides live and archived access to all the conferences, lectures and presentations taking place at the Library.
