The Yıldız Palace Theatre, built in 1899, was the third theatre for opera and drama constructed in Istanbul, after the other two burned down in 1846 and 1870. Although private and in the palace grounds, this theatre, like Istanbul’s public opera house, hosted travelling opera companies from Europe. Both Turkish and European artists performed here.
