Description:

The 19th century saw a number of important advances in the medical field. René Laënnec (1781–1926) was a French doctor who invented the stethoscope, allowing him to improve medical diagnoses by listening to patients' chests. Doctors were thus able to analyse sounds inside the body, and link them to illnesses such as tuberculosis, which was very common in the 19th century.
