Portrait of a standing male Yezidi from Sinjar. Claudius Rich made observations and drawings not only of sites but also of people. Early travellers often studied the customs and costumes of local peoples, as well as drawing landscapes or mapping territories. There was no such thing as a professional archaeologist yet.
