Lang was manager of the Imperial Ottoman Bank in Larnaka, 1863–1872, that ran the finances of the Ottoman administration. He conducted excavations at Dali (ancient Idlaion) in the centre of the island in the late 1860s. His report is the first systematic account of an excavation produced on the island. Lang went on to a series of posts with the IOB in Alexandria, Romania and Constantinople, becoming Director General of the bank. He was honoured by Queen Victoria, the king of Rumania, the Khedive and the Sultan.
