Description:

This painting by an anonymous Ottoman artist shows the aqueduct of Belgrade Forest outside Istanbul. Istanbul’s water was stored in the reservoirs of Belgrade Forest and conveyed to the city across a number of aqueducts like this one. Established in early Ottoman times, the Istanbul water supply system was expanded and improved throughout the Ottoman period, incorporating complex systems of reservoirs, aqueducts and supply pipes endling in fountains and waterspouts.
