Description:

The Italian Orientalist painter Stefano Ussi's painting Surre Regiment depicts the deva caravan carrying gifts from Cairo to Kaaba, the pilgrims and a regiment of the Ottoman army assigned to protect the caravan. Surre Regiment is the largest painting of the Painting Collection of the National Palaces. The composition reflects the emotions of Muslims during the pilgrimage to Mecca, whose ethnic structures, growing styles and points of view regarding Islam are different. The frame of the painting dated 1873 is surrounded by Arabic Kufic script, which is a part of the 126th verse in Surah Al-Imran that reads, “There is no help or victory except from Allah, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise”. Surre Regiment is presumed to be included in the Palace’s collection by being purchased or given by Mısır Hıdivi as a gift for Sultan Abdülaziz.
