The basis of Turkish painting drawing influence from western tradition was laid when Mühendishane-i Berr-i Hümayun (the Naval Academy) opened in 1795. Halil Pasha, who had been a student of the painting courses held at the Academy, was foremost among the painters with a military background who founded a western style art tradition in Turkey. He worked with Jean Leon Gerome in his atelier in Paris. He provided a unique distinction to the analysis of impressionist light and colour, and was an example of artists dealing with impressionist technique. Because of his qualified knowledge about anatomy and his interest in depicting the human figure, Halil Pasha had a unique place in Turkish Art History.
