Description:

The majority of Turkish painters in the 19th century were Ottoman officers who had studied abroad. Hüseyin Zekai Pasha was one of those painters. Following his education at the Kuleli Military High School, he continued his studies at the Military Academy (Mektebi Harbiye), where he had a chance to learn technical drawing and perspective. His first period was realistic and his pictorial representation includes scenes or events from everyday life. In his first works, Hüseyin Zekai Pasha followed the painting tradition of 19th century, including thin paint dough and light colours. He made changes in his techniques through the Galatasaray Exhibition and eventually he turned into an impressionist whose work was dominated by thicker brush strokes.
