During the 19th century, new technologies radically transformed both travel and communications. The Cendere Hamidian Water Pump Station was built by Abdülhamid II in 1902. The station is located at an altitude of 34 metres above sea level. With its function, architectural design and mechanical equipment, the station is a unique reminder of Ottoman architecture. It pumped to Balmumcu and Beşiktaş – with water coming from 20 different pipes in Kağıthane, propelled by steam pump machines.
