This copy of a beautiful watercolour from Charles Lallemand's book Tunis et ses Environs shows the Porte de la Mer, or the Porte de France, around which both European settlers and Tunisian residents are gathered. Its location was strategic, as it led to both the Tunis medina and the European quarter.
